Special Enrollment Period (SEP) #10: You Have Had Medicare Eligibility Issues

Special Enrollment Period (SEP) #10 You Have Had Medicare Eligibility Issues by Las Vegas Medicare

Medicare beneficiaries in Las Vegas, Henderson, and Clark County, Nevada, may encounter specific eligibility issues that qualify them for Special Enrollment Period (SEP) #10. This SEP allows individuals to enroll in, change, or disenroll from Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans outside the standard enrollment periods.

1. Retroactive Enrollment into Medicare

If you receive retroactive enrollment into Medicare, you qualify for an SEP to join a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan. This SEP begins in the month you receive your notice of Medicare entitlement and lasts for two additional months.

Example: Maria from Henderson received a Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) decision that retroactively entitled her to Medicare starting six months prior. Upon receiving her entitlement notice, Maria has two months to enroll in a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan.

2. Enrolling in Part B During the General Enrollment Period (GEP)

Individuals who enroll in Medicare Part B during the GEP (January 1 to March 31 annually) without premium-free Part A qualify for an SEP. This SEP begins when you submit your application for Part B and lasts for two additional months.

Example: John from Las Vegas missed his initial enrollment period and enrolled in Part B during the GEP. His Part B coverage starts in July, and he has until September to enroll in a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan.

3. Involuntary Loss of Part B

If you involuntarily lose Medicare Part B but retain Part A, and this causes disenrollment from your Medicare Advantage Plan, you qualify for an SEP to enroll in a Medicare Part D plan. This SEP begins when you become aware of your Part B loss and lasts for two additional months.

Example: Linda in Clark County lost her Part B coverage due to an administrative error. She was disenrolled from her Medicare Advantage plan. Upon notification, Linda has two months to enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan to maintain drug coverage while resolving her Part B issue.

Summary

SEP #10 addresses Medicare eligibility issues, providing critical opportunities to secure or adjust coverage. Whether you face retroactive Medicare entitlement, enroll in Part B during the GEP, or experience an involuntary loss of Part B, understanding your SEP options ensures continuous healthcare coverage.
