Medicare Supplement, also known as Medigap, refers to a type of private health insurance designed to help individuals cover some of the healthcare costs that Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Part B) doesn’t fully cover. Original Medicare provides coverage for various medical services and treatments, but it doesn’t cover all expenses, leaving beneficiaries responsible for out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

Medicare Supplement plans are offered by private insurance companies and are standardized by the federal government. This means that regardless of which insurance company you choose, the benefits for a specific standardized plan will remain the same. As of my last update in September 2021, there are ten standardized Medigap plans, labeled with letters from Plan A to Plan N. Each plan offers a different combination of benefits, with Plan A being the most basic and Plans F and G being among the most comprehensive.

Here are some key points to know about Medicare Supplement plans:

  1. Coverage Gap Filling: Medigap plans are designed to fill the gaps in coverage left by Original Medicare. They can help pay for some or all of the out-of-pocket costs, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

  1. Standardization: The benefits offered by each Medigap plan are standardized across insurance companies. For example, if you choose Plan G from one insurer, it will have the same benefits as Plan G from another insurer.

  1. Monthly Premiums: While Medigap plans provide additional coverage, they typically come with a monthly premium in addition to the premium you pay for Medicare Part B.

  2. No Network Restrictions: Most Medigap plans allow you to see any doctor or specialist who accepts Medicare patients, without network restrictions.

  1. No Prescription Drug Coverage: Medigap plans do not cover prescription drugs. For prescription drug coverage, you would need to enroll in a standalone Medicare Part D plan.

  1. Enrollment Timing: The best time to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this period, you have guaranteed issue rights, meaning insurance companies cannot deny you coverage or charge you higher premiums based on pre-existing conditions.
